All ODI Resources

Our work is organized in two main strands:

  • K-16: transforming K-16 classrooms through the integration of data skills into STEM teaching and learning. View K-16 Projects | Resources.
  • Workforce Preparation: working with community colleges, big data industry experts, and career and technical educators, to help prepare students and early career professionals to succeed in the big data world. View Workforce Prep Projects | Resources.

Type Title
Curriculum Other Worlds/Other Earths Curriculum Activities

EDC worked with the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics to create an engaging set of curriculum activities that involve students in using data encoded in the light from distant stars to search for exoplanets and possible life beyond Earth.

Interface/Tool The Common Online Data Analysis Platform (CODAP)

In collaboration with Concord Consortium and the University of Minnesota, EDC's Oceans of Data Institute is developing and classroom-testing an online, open-source data analysis platform that can be used in conjunction with a variety of data types and curricula.

Interface/Tool Data-Enhanced Investigations in Climate Change Education (DICCE)

The project team has developed supports to allow high school teachers and students to access and use climate-related data from the Goddard Interactive Online Visualization and Analysis Intrastructure (GIOVANNI) data portal.

Curriculum Ocean Tracks: High School Learning Modules

Ocean Tracks: Investigating Marine Migrations in a Changing Ocean has piloted several models of curriculum supports to guide student work with data regarding the movements of marine animals and relate these movements to physical oceanographic measurements such as sea surface temperature, chlorophyll, currents and human impacts....

Presentation Students' Use of Physical Models to Experience Key Aspects of Scientists' Knowledge Creation Process

This talk was one of a related paper set emerging from a project researching how teachers teach and students learn Earth Science using physical models. Kastens’ contribution was a theory paper exploring how scientists use physical models and computational models to create new knowledge at the frontiers of science...

Presentation Teaching and Learning with Data

This talk focused on helping students span the transition from working with small student -collected datasets to large professionally-collected datasets....

Presentation What Do Geoscience Novices and Experts Look at and What Do They See when Viewing Geoscience Data Visualizations

This poster was aimed at an interdisciplinary audience who work on all sorts of visualizations across all fields of science and science education. It reports the findings from a study in which we used eye-tracking and video-taped think aloud interviews to study how geoscience novices and experts interpret topographic and bathymetric data visualizations.

Scientific Publication Using Online Telescopes to Explore Exoplanets from the Physics Classroom

Thanks to the development of online telescopes, students can detect more than a dozen of the known exoplanets from the classroom, using data they gather, assess, and interpret for themselves. This program presents a suite of activities in which students apply basic physics concepts to their investigations of exoplanets....

Book EDC Earth Science

EDC Earth Science takes students on an exploration of these questions and others, seeking answers grounded in authentic data and the growing body of knowledge about Earth’s systems....
